AUTISM ART BY MITCHELL

Mitchell was diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2 years old.  It literally shattered any dreams we had of the future we pictured for him, sports, girlfriends, college, marriage.  There was not a lot of info in 1998 and it was very scary.
He began to speak at age 6 in full sentences and loved to be around other kids but not play with them as a typical 6 year old would do.  He could draw and loved all art activities but we really didn't notice his true art ability  till a 3rd grade teacher said he would copy her example exactly the way she did in a matter of minutes.  From there we included his exposure to art a little more even though he didn't seem interested.
It was hard for any teacher to teach him an art lesson, he needed to be taught outside the box , in a unique way.  Even today, a standard art class would not be suitable for him, he learns his way, takes things in differently, sees colors in another way that he can not explain. He likes to paint from pictures I take or pictures he has taken himself.
He loves nature, loves making people happy and loves to paint and make things from clay.
Our dreams have changed over the years and he exceeds them all the time.  He may have difficulty from time to time but we believe he is truly happy in this profession of an Artist that he has chosen.
